Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s fiery critique of the INDI alliance, comprising the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Congress, and Left parties, has ignited a fresh wave of controversy, particularly surrounding the contentious issue of appeasement politics.
Speaking at a charged public rally in Krishnanagar, Nadia, West Bengal, PM Modi launched a blistering attack on the alliance, alleging that its sole agenda revolves around appeasement politics. “The INDI alliance, consisting of TMC, Congress, and Left, knows only one thing, and that is appeasement,” Modi asserted, drawing sharp lines in the political sand and highlighting the BJP’s longstanding accusation against opposition parties.
Modi did not stop at merely critiquing the alliance’s political agenda but delved into the historical fault lines of India’s partition, squarely placing the blame on the Congress for dividing the country along religious lines. “What was the fault of Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, Sikhs, and Jains who were left on the other side of the border?” Modi queried, questioning the moral integrity of the Congress party’s leadership during India’s tumultuous partition era.
Further, PM Modi lamented the plight of communities left behind after partition, asserting that despite promises made at the time of independence to safeguard their interests, they were eventually sidelined. This, according to Modi, necessitated the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) decision to enact the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), passed by the Indian Parliament in 2019, aims to grant citizenship to persecuted minorities from neighboring countries who entered India before 2015. However, the act has been a subject of intense debate, with critics arguing that it discriminates against Muslims, inflaming communal tensions.
PM Modi’s comments come amid escalating political tensions in West Bengal, a state fiercely contested by the BJP and the ruling TMC. The rally in Krishnanagar forms part of the BJP’s concerted efforts to solidify its foothold in the state, where it has been making significant inroads in recent years.
