In a scathing critique, BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla has accused the Congress party of gross misappropriation of funds meant for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST), amidst investigations by the National Commission for SC/ST into alleged fund diversions in Karnataka. Poonawalla’s remarks come amid escalating tensions over financial accountability and political integrity in the state.
The National Commission for SC/ST has initiated a probe, demanding a comprehensive report from the Karnataka government regarding the alleged diversion of SC/ST funds. This development has sparked widespread concern and scrutiny, particularly within political circles.
“Congress is the most anti-SC, ST, and tribal party,” Poonawalla declared, leveling serious allegations against the opposition party. He claimed that the Congress-led administration in Karnataka was planning to divert a staggering Rs 14,000 crores, amounting to 37% of the state budget, towards what he termed as “crackpot schemes.”
Poonawalla further criticized the Congress for recent increases in taxes, as well as the prices of essential commodities such as water, diesel, petrol, and milk. He pointed to a recent scandal involving the Valmiki Tribal Development Corporation, where he alleged that crores of rupees were siphoned off by Congress leaders, resulting in the resignation of a minister.
“Congress is the most anti-Dalit party,” Poonawalla asserted, framing the accusations within the broader context of social justice and equitable governance.
The allegations by Poonawalla have reignited political tensions, with opposition parties and civil society groups calling for transparency and accountability in the utilization of SC/ST funds. The Karnataka government, led by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, has yet to issue an official response to the accusations.
