New Delhi — In his latest “Mann Ki Baat” episode, Prime Minister Narendra Modi proudly announced that Charaideo Maidam in Assam has been officially recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This honor makes Charaideo Maidam India’s 43rd World Heritage Site and marks the first such designation from the Northeast region of the country.

During his address, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the historical and cultural significance of Charaideo Maidam, explaining that “Charaideo” means “shining city on the hills.” The site, which was the inaugural capital of the Ahom dynasty, is renowned for its unique burial mounds or Maidams. These ancient structures were traditionally used by the Ahom people to house the remains of their ancestors and important possessions, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the dynasty.

“This recognition by UNESCO is not only a proud moment for Assam but for the entire nation. Charaideo Maidam’s inclusion in the World Heritage list highlights the historical richness and cultural depth of our heritage,” Modi remarked.

The Prime Minister emphasized that this prestigious acknowledgment will significantly boost tourism in Assam, drawing international attention to the region’s historical treasures. “Being recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site will attract tourists from around the globe, bringing greater awareness and appreciation for Charaideo Maidam’s historical importance,” Modi said.

Encouraging citizens to explore this newly recognized heritage site, Modi stated, “I invite everyone to include Charaideo Maidam in their travel plans. Experiencing this site firsthand will offer a unique insight into our historical legacy and the grandeur of the Ahom dynasty.”

The inclusion of Charaideo Maidam on the UNESCO World Heritage list is expected to enhance cultural tourism and contribute to the preservation of India’s diverse historical heritage. As the first site from Northeast India to receive this distinction, Charaideo Maidam represents a significant milestone in the global recognition of the region’s rich cultural history.
