Union Minister Ramdas Athawale Opposes Muslim-Only Township Proposal Near Mumbai

Date:

Bengaluru, Karnataka: Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale has voiced strong opposition to a controversial proposal by certain builders to establish a Muslim-only township near Mumbai. Calling the idea “objectionable, illegal, and wrong,” Athawale stressed that such moves threaten the spirit of inclusivity that India stands for.

“This is the first time in the country that some builders have announced plans to build a separate township for the Muslim community. The Maharashtra government has opposed this, and many people are also against it. This does not mean opposition to Muslims, but neither can such a township be announced for Hindus or Muslims,” he said.

Athawale emphasized that India’s strength lies in unity and coexistence, and attempts to segregate housing projects based on religion could create deep social divides. “I also oppose it, as announcing such a township is illegal and wrong. Legal action should be taken against them. This is our demand,” the Union Minister added.

He further highlighted that any move to create religion-specific residential townships undermines the principles of the Constitution and sets a dangerous precedent. Instead, Athawale urged builders and developers to focus on inclusive housing projects that foster harmony among all communities.

The statement comes amid growing debate in Maharashtra, where the state government has already expressed its disapproval of the plan. Civil society groups too have raised concerns, calling the proposal discriminatory and unconstitutional.
