Karnataka HC Dismisses Petition on Dasara Festival Inauguration; BJP’s R. Ashoka Reacts

Date:

After the Karnataka High Court dismissed a petition challenging the decision to allow Banu Mushtaq, a member of the Muslim community, to inaugurate the Dasara festival, political reactions intensified across the state. The petition, which sought to question her eligibility to inaugurate the historic Hindu festival, was rejected by the court on the grounds that no law restricts individuals of other faiths from inaugurating cultural events.

Responding to the verdict, Leader of Opposition (LoP) and BJP leader R. Ashoka expressed his party’s disapproval and vowed legislative action if the BJP returns to power. “There is no law in Karnataka like this. That’s why the court has given the verdict. But when the BJP government comes, we will make a law on it, and everything will be perfect,” Ashoka stated. He further questioned the decision on moral and religious grounds, arguing that Hindu festivals should ideally be inaugurated by individuals who respect Hindu traditions and symbols.

Ashoka emphasized that the BJP’s protest was not merely about Banu Mushtaq’s religion, but about her alleged refusal to accept the Hindu god, Kannada language, and the Kannada flag. He contrasted the situation by asking whether members of the Hindu community were invited to inaugurate festivals of other religions, underscoring his party’s stance on preserving religious customs.

The controversy has sparked a wider debate in Karnataka over secularism, tradition, and the boundaries between religion and governance. While the High Court’s decision reinforces the constitutional principle of equality, the BJP’s push for a future law signals a potential flashpoint in the state’s political discourse.
