Bengaluru: In a bold move to tackle the city’s perennial traffic congestion, the Bengaluru Traffic Police has proposed a comprehensive infrastructure plan that could transform commuting across the city. Under the proposal, Bengaluru could see 35 new flyovers, 25 underpasses, and 101 skywalks, aimed at easing vehicular and pedestrian movement.
A Holistic Approach to Traffic Management
The ambitious plan focuses on redesigning major choke points, intersections, and pedestrian corridors. In addition to the large structures, the project includes thousands of smaller interventions such as improved road signage, upgraded pedestrian crossings, better drainage, and smarter traffic signal management.
Traffic police officials highlighted that the initiative reflects the urgency of long-term solutions for Bengaluru, one of India’s most congested cities, where daily gridlocks result in long commute times and safety concerns.
Key Highlights of the Proposal
35 Flyovers: To ease traffic at busy intersections and arterial roads
25 Underpasses: For signal-free movement and faster traffic flow
101 Skywalks: Dedicated pedestrian pathways to improve safety
3,700+ Smaller Upgrades: Including improved road markings, lighting, and drainage systems
Impact on Commuters
If implemented, the plan is expected to:
Significantly reduce traffic congestion in key areas
Shorten travel times during peak hours
Enhance pedestrian safety with dedicated skywalks
Improve overall mobility and connectivity across Bengaluru
Officials described the proposal as a holistic blueprint for reimagining the city’s road network rather than relying on ad hoc measures.
Challenges and Considerations
While the plan has generated optimism, experts caution that increasing road capacity alone may not fully solve congestion unless paired with strengthened public transport, traffic demand management, and last-mile connectivity solutions.
