The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) convened a pivotal video conference meeting today, chaired by its Chairman, to address the implementation and registration of marriages under the Anand Marriage Act across states and Union Territories (UTs) in India.
The Anand Marriage Act, enacted in 1909, is a crucial legislative provision for the Sikh community, providing a legal framework for the registration of their marriages. Despite its longstanding existence, the Act has faced uneven implementation across different regions, prompting concerns over equitable access to marriage rights for Sikhs.
During the virtual meeting, representatives from states and UTs engaged in constructive discussions on the status of implementing the Anand Marriage Act within their respective jurisdictions. States such as Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and Meghalaya shared successful experiences of implementing the Act, highlighting the positive impact on ensuring legal recognition and protection for Sikh marriages.
Conversely, several states and UTs acknowledged delays in implementing the Act but committed to expediting the process within the next two months. This commitment underscores a collective effort to streamline and standardize the registration procedures for Sikh marriages nationwide.
The Chairman of NCM emphasized the importance of uniform implementation of the Anand Marriage Act to uphold the rights of the Sikh community. He stressed the need for proactive measures by all states and UTs to ensure that Sikh couples receive equal treatment and legal validation of their marriages across the country.
In response, the NCM pledged its support to facilitate the implementation process by providing technical assistance and guidance to states facing administrative challenges.
