UK and India Forge Closer Ties as Foreign Secretary David Lammy Concludes Diplomatic Visit

Date:

UK Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs David Lammy concluded his diplomatic visit to India with a firm commitment to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two nations. Lammy’s visit, the first by a high-level UK official under Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s administration, focused on expanding cooperation across economic, technological, and security domains.

During his engagements with Indian counterparts, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Lammy expressed optimism about the trajectory of UK-India relations. He highlighted the bilateral Technology Security Initiative and reiterated the UK’s resolve to finalize a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to unlock new avenues for economic growth and collaboration.

“The discussions have been productive and forward-looking, emphasizing our shared goals in sustainable development, innovation, and global security,” Lammy remarked, reflecting on the outcomes of his meetings.

Lammy’s visit underscored the importance of enhancing the ‘Living Bridge’ – the vibrant Indian diaspora in the UK, which plays a crucial role in fostering cultural exchange and strengthening bilateral ties. “The contributions of British Indians enrich our societies and underpin the enduring friendship between our nations,” Lammy acknowledged.

In addition to bilateral talks, Lammy engaged with key stakeholders from the business and climate sectors to explore opportunities for joint initiatives in renewable energy, climate resilience, and public health. His visit coincided with preparations for the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Laos, where Lammy will continue advocating for deeper UK engagement in Southeast Asia and beyond.

“The UK remains committed to a future-oriented partnership with India, built on mutual respect, shared values, and a commitment to global prosperity,” Lammy affirmed, highlighting the strategic importance of aligning efforts on regional and global challenges.

As both countries look ahead, Lammy’s visit symbolizes a renewed commitment to harnessing their combined strengths for inclusive growth, innovation, and sustainable development in a rapidly changing global landscape.
