Bommai Criticizes Congress for Contradictions on Caste Census Following Anurag Thakur’s Comments

Date:

Former Karnataka Chief Minister and BJP MP Basavaraj Bommai has voiced strong criticism of the Congress party’s reaction to BJP MP Anurag Thakur’s recent statements regarding the caste census. Bommai’s comments come as a response to the Congress party’s protests and accusations against Thakur.

Bommai expressed disbelief at Congress’ handling of the caste census debate. “I am shocked. How can a caste census be conducted without asking about caste?” Bommai said, questioning the party’s logic and consistency on the issue. He highlighted what he perceives as a contradiction in Congress’ position, given their advocacy for a caste-based census.

The controversy erupted after Thakur made remarks suggesting that questioning the caste of individuals, including politicians, should not be deemed offensive if a caste census is pursued. In response, Congress has accused Thakur of making insensitive and provocative statements.

Bommai defended Thakur and criticized Congress for what he sees as a double standard. “If Congress feels insulted by Anurag Thakur’s remarks, they are in fact insulting the entire nation by pushing for a caste census. They demand a caste-based enumeration, yet object to being questioned about their own caste,” Bommai stated.

The debate around the caste census has intensified political discussions, with parties and leaders offering varying viewpoints on its necessity and impact. Bommai’s comments reflect the broader tension in Indian politics over how caste issues are addressed and perceived.

Bommai’s remarks underscore the ongoing disputes within Indian politics regarding caste-based policies and the implications of their implementation. The discussion continues to be a flashpoint in political discourse, revealing the complexities and sensitivities surrounding caste in contemporary India.
