PM Modi Advocates for Multilateral Reforms at U.N. Assembly and Engages with Quad Leaders

Date:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in New York on September 22, 2024, to participate in the 79th U.N. General Assembly, where he underscored the importance of reforming global institutions for lasting peace and development. His address at the Summit of the Future highlighted the urgent need for a renewed commitment to multilateralism amid evolving global challenges.

The two-day summit marks a pivotal moment ahead of the high-level meeting of world leaders scheduled at the United Nations. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres initiated this gathering with a clarion call for action last year, urging nations to modernize the existing global frameworks to better serve the needs of a rapidly changing world.

In a separate event on Long Island, Modi spoke to thousands of supporters, showcasing his government’s accomplishments over the past ten years while outlining future aspirations for India. He celebrated the contributions of the Indian diaspora, framing them as key partners in India’s global journey.

Additionally, Modi participated in the sixth summit meeting of the Quad nations—U.S. President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida—held at Biden’s former school, Archmere Academy. The leaders announced several significant initiatives, including a new coast guard exercise, a logistics network for enhanced cooperation, expanded maritime surveillance, and a joint project focused on combating cervical cancer.

As the summit progresses, discussions are set to center on the themes of global cooperation and institutional reform, aiming to address urgent global issues and foster a collaborative future for all nations.
