The Central Government has notified the “Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order, 2026” under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 to strengthen natural gas infrastructure and improve ease of doing business in the sector.
Order Comes into Immediate Effect
Implemented through the Petroleum Ministry, the new order has come into immediate effect, providing a simplified and time-bound framework for laying, constructing, operating, and expanding gas pipelines across the country.
The move aims to:
- Eliminate delays in approvals
- Address land access challenges
- Accelerate infrastructure development, especially in residential areas
It establishes a transparent, investor-friendly ecosystem for efficient gas distribution and faster expansion of infrastructure.
Focus on Expanding PNG Network
A key objective of the reform is to expand the Piped Natural Gas (PNG) network and improve last-mile connectivity.
This will promote the use of clean fuel in:
- Household cooking
- Transportation
- Industrial applications
The initiative is expected to strengthen India’s energy security and support the transition towards a gas-based economy.

According to the official statement, the order resolves key issues such as:
- Infrastructure bottlenecks

“The core objective is to simplify processes, reduce regulatory hurdles, and create a transparent and predictable environment for stakeholders,” the government said.
