The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has clarified that there is no shortage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in the country and the supply situation remains fully stable and under control.
Following the implementation of the LPG Control Order, domestic refinery production has increased by 40%, raising daily LPG output to 50 TMT, which meets over 60% of India’s total daily requirement of around 80 TMT.
As a result, the country’s net import requirement has reduced to 30 TMT per day, significantly lowering dependence on foreign supplies.
Strong Import Backup with 22 LPG Terminals
In addition to domestic production, India has secured 800 TMT LPG cargo from countries like the US, Russia, and Australia. These supplies are being received at 22 LPG import terminals, compared to just 11 terminals in 2014.
This ensures that India has nearly one month of LPG supply secured, with additional procurement underway to maintain uninterrupted availability.
Oil Companies Maintaining High Distribution Levels
Oil marketing companies are successfully distributing over 50 lakh LPG cylinders daily across the country.
At one point, demand surged to 89 lakh cylinders per day due to panic buying, but it has now stabilized back to normal levels.
To prevent hoarding and black marketing, the government has increased the allocation of commercial LPG cylinders by 50%, in coordination with state governments.
Government Promotes PNG as Cleaner Alternative
The government is also promoting Piped Natural Gas (PNG) as a cleaner, safer, and more affordable alternative for households.
India currently produces 92 MMSCMD (Million Metric Standard Cubic Meters per Day) of natural gas domestically, out of a total daily requirement of 191 MMSCMD—making PNG less import-dependent compared to LPG.
City Gas Distribution (CGD) networks have expanded significantly from 57 geographical areas in 2014 to over 300 today.
PNG Connections Cross 1.5 Crore Mark
Domestic PNG connections have grown rapidly from 25 lakh to over 1.5 crore households, reflecting India’s long-term energy strategy.
The ministry clarified that PNG promotion is not due to any LPG shortage but is part of a broader plan to provide efficient and sustainable energy solutions.
Government Urges Citizens to Avoid Panic and Misinformation
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas reiterated that LPG, petrol, and diesel supplies are fully adequate across the country.
Citizens have been urged not to fall for misinformation or panic-inducing rumors, which are being spread deliberately to create unnecessary concern.
