The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has reported a significant rise in Piped Natural Gas (PNG) expansion, with 3.42 lakh new connections activated since March 2026 and 3.7 lakh fresh registrations recorded across the country.
States Asked to Support PNG Expansion
The ministry has directed states to actively support the rollout of PNG connections for:
- Domestic households
- Commercial consumers
This push aims to accelerate the adoption of clean and efficient fuel alternatives.
Adequate Availability of Fuel Assured
The government has assured that:
- Petrol, diesel, and LPG supplies are sufficient
- Distribution systems are functioning normally
Citizens have been urged to:
- Avoid panic buying or unnecessary LPG bookings
- Use digital platforms for LPG booking
- Refrain from visiting gas agencies without need
Push for Alternative Cooking Fuels
To reduce dependence on LPG, the ministry has encouraged the use of:
- PNG connections
- Induction cooktops
- Electric cooking appliances
The government has also emphasized energy conservation amid global uncertainties.
Advisory Against Rumours
People have been advised to rely only on official information sources and avoid misinformation related to fuel availability and pricing.
Priority Amid Global Supply Challenges
Amid disruptions caused by the ongoing Iran-related conflict, the government has prioritized:
- Domestic LPG and PNG supply
- Essential services like hospitals and educational institutions
Measures to Maintain Supply Stability
Several steps have been taken on both supply and demand sides:
- Increased refinery production
- Extended LPG booking intervals (21 to 25 days in urban areas, up to 45 days in rural areas)
- Close monitoring of distribution
Alternative Fuel Availability
To ease LPG demand, alternative fuels like:
- Kerosene
- Coal
are being made available. Coal allocations have been increased through agencies like Coal India and Singareni Collieries.
Rise in Small Cylinder Distribution
States have been advised to promote 5 kg LPG cylinders based on local needs:
- Over 5 lakh small cylinders sold since March 23
- More than 67,000 sold in a single day recently
Strict Monitoring and Review
The Petroleum Secretary held meetings with states and UTs to:
- Review fuel supply
- Ensure priority distribution to essential services
- Prevent hoarding, diversion, and misinformation
No Disruption for Migrant Workers
States have clarified that LPG supply to migrant workers remains normal and stable, dismissing reports of any disruption.
