Bengaluru, April 2026: The cost of Phase-1 of the Bengaluru Business Corridor has risen sharply by approximately ₹3,500 crore following extensive design revisions, officials confirmed. With this increase, the revised budget for the first phase now stands at around ₹10,500 crore, up from the original estimate of ₹6,800–7,000 crore.
Design Overhaul and Key Changes
The cost escalation is mainly due to a redesign that aims to improve traffic flow, safety, and infrastructure standards. Key changes include:
Expansion of road width from 50m to 65m
Addition of service roads on both sides
Construction of multiple flyovers and eight major interchanges, including Doddaballapura Road, Hennur Road, Whitefield, and Sarjapur
Extended elevated stretches in Package-1 to reduce congestion
Project Timeline and Packages
Phase-1 has been divided into three packages spanning roughly 21 km, 20 km, and 30 km respectively. Authorities have warned that the timeline may be adjusted due to ongoing redesigns and construction adjustments.
Stakeholder Concerns
Farmer groups and local associations have expressed concerns over rising costs, highlighting that civil work costs per km have surged from ₹82 crore/km to nearly ₹230 crore/km. They have also questioned the tendering process, noting that final environmental clearances and Detailed Project Reports (DPR) are yet to be fully approved.
Outlook
Officials indicate that further cost increases may occur as construction progresses, citing inflation and additional design refinements. The corridor, once completed, is expected to significantly improve connectivity, reduce congestion, and bolster economic growth across Bengaluru’s key business hubs.
Project Significance
The Bengaluru Business Corridor is envisioned as a signal-free, eight-lane expressway, linking major arterial roads and commercial centers around the city, aimed at easing traffic and supporting future urban growth.
