Bengaluru: Victoria Hospital’s Long-Awaited Q-Block Ready for Launch on May 2

Date:

Bengaluru: In a major upgrade to the city’s public healthcare system, Victoria Hospital is set to inaugurate its long-awaited 10-storey ‘Q-Block’ on May 2, nearly seven years after construction began.

The new block is expected to significantly enhance patient care by adding 629 new beds to the hospital’s existing 1,000-bed capacity, taking the total strength to well over 1,600 beds. The expansion is crucial for a facility that handles an average outpatient load of 700–1,000 patients daily, along with a heavy inpatient burden.

Project Cost and Delays

Originally sanctioned at around ₹68 crore, the project saw cost escalation to nearly ₹90 crore, largely due to construction delays, infrastructure upgrades, and additional facility requirements over the years.

Detailed Floor-Wise Plan

Hospital authorities have outlined a comprehensive layout for the Q-Block:

  • Ground and first five floors: Dedicated to general wards, including departments like general medicine, surgery, and orthopaedics
  • 6th and 7th floors: Will house special wards, high-dependency units, and operation theatres, including a VVIP section
  • 8th and 9th floors: Planned as a full-fledged surgical complex with 8 operation theatres to handle advanced procedures
  • Terrace: Provision for a future helipad, aimed at improving emergency response and patient transport

Medical Infrastructure and Facilities

The new building is designed to offer modern healthcare infrastructure, including:

  • Advanced operation theatres
  • High-dependency and critical care units
  • Plans for a dedicated ICU complex (under consideration)
  • Improved patient flow systems to reduce overcrowding

Operational Preparations

Authorities have begun installing medical equipment, with some already delivered. Simultaneously, staff recruitment and deployment are underway to ensure the facility becomes operational soon after inauguration.

As part of internal restructuring, the orthopaedics department will be shifted to the new block, helping streamline services and free up space in older buildings.

Impact on Healthcare Services

The Q-Block is expected to:

  • Reduce patient congestion and waiting times
  • Improve quality of treatment and accessibility
  • Strengthen emergency and surgical care capacity
  • Support Bengaluru’s growing population with expanded public healthcare services

Officials believe the project will mark a significant milestone for government healthcare in Karnataka, reinforcing Victoria Hospital’s role as one of the largest and most critical medical institutions in the state.

The opening of the Q-Block not only addresses long-standing infrastructure gaps but also signals a shift toward modernised, high-capacity public healthcare delivery in Bengaluru.
