Varanasi to Get Major Infrastructure Upgrade as PM Modi Announces 6,270 Crore Projects

Date:

Lucknow: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Varanasi on April 28 to inaugurate and lay foundation stones for projects worth ₹6,270 crore, giving a fresh boost to infrastructure development in his parliamentary constituency. The initiative will span multiple sectors, including urban infrastructure, transport connectivity, public services, and civic upgrades, with the aim of further transforming the historic city into a modern urban centre.

According to officials, these projects will be unveiled during the Prime Minister’s visit to Kashi, where he is expected to interact with local stakeholders and review ongoing development work in eastern Uttar Pradesh. The ₹6,270 crore package is part of continued investment efforts aimed at strengthening infrastructure and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents in Varanasi.

Major Development Push Ahead of PM’s Visit

The upcoming projects include both inauguration of completed works and foundation laying for new initiatives, covering key areas such as road connectivity, urban transport systems, water supply, sanitation, and public amenities. Authorities believe these projects will help reduce congestion, improve mobility, and upgrade essential infrastructure across urban as well as semi-urban areas.

Varanasi, known as one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, has undergone significant transformation under several government schemes, including smart city initiatives and heritage conservation programmes. The new projects are expected to further accelerate this progress, particularly in sectors linked to tourism and urban modernisation.

Focus on Connectivity and Urban Expansion

A large portion of the ₹6,270 crore investment will be directed toward improving transport infrastructure and urban connectivity, including better road networks, upgraded public transport, and stronger last-mile connectivity. These measures aim to ensure smoother movement in the city, which experiences heavy daily footfall due to its religious and cultural significance.

In addition, improvements in water supply and sewage systems are also planned to address long-standing civic issues in rapidly growing urban areas. These upgrades are expected to enhance sanitation standards and support sustainable urban growth.

Officials added that these initiatives align with the broader vision of developing Varanasi into a modern, well-connected, and globally recognised heritage city, where infrastructure development is balanced with preservation of its cultural identity.

Ongoing Transformation of Varanasi

Since 2014, Varanasi has remained a focus area for large-scale infrastructure investment, with multiple development phases already completed. The upcoming ₹6,270 crore projects will add momentum to this ongoing transformation, reinforcing efforts to strengthen infrastructure in emerging urban centres.

The city has already seen improvements in road networks, redevelopment of ghats, modernisation of public facilities, and expansion of tourism infrastructure. The Prime Minister’s upcoming visit is expected to build on these achievements with new projects aimed at long-term growth.

Significance of the Announcement

The planned launch is being viewed as a crucial step in shaping Varanasi into a vibrant urban and cultural hub, combining heritage preservation with modern development. With investments across multiple sectors, the initiative is expected to generate employment, improve public services, and enhance overall urban living standards.

As preparations for the visit continue, officials are finalising project details and arrangements. The announcement is expected to mark another major milestone in the development journey of one of India’s most culturally and politically significant cities.
