Namma Metro Pink Line Enters Trial Phase from April 28; Safety Checks Underway

Date:

Bengaluru: In a significant boost to the city’s expanding public transport network, the much-awaited Namma Metro Pink Line has entered a crucial stage, with trial runs officially beginning on April 28, 2026. This development marks a key milestone in the journey toward operationalizing one of Bengaluru’s most important metro corridors.

The trials are being carried out under the supervision of the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), which is responsible for ensuring that all systems meet stringent safety and technical standards. These tests are scheduled to continue until May 12, during which authorities will conduct a series of evaluations to assess the performance of trains, track alignment, signalling systems, braking efficiency, and overall operational readiness.

Officials have emphasized that this phase is essential to verify whether the infrastructure can support safe and efficient passenger services. Based on the data collected during these trials, the RDSO will issue an interim speed certificate, which determines the permissible speed limits for trains on the corridor.

Even after the completion of these trials, the Pink Line must pass through a detailed and multi-layered approval process before it can be opened to the public. This includes inspections and clearances from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS), followed by approvals from the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety and the Railway Board. The entire process is expected to take around two to three months, making an immediate launch unlikely.

Currently, five train sets have already been deployed for the initial operational stretch, which covers approximately 7 kilometres between Kalena Agrahara and Tavarekere. This section is expected to be the first to open for public use once all necessary approvals are secured.

The Pink Line, once fully completed, will span around 21 kilometres, connecting Kalena Agrahara in South Bengaluru to Nagawara in the northern part of the city. A significant portion of the route, particularly between Dairy Circle and Nagawara, will run underground, adding to the complexity and importance of the project. Authorities are aiming to complete the entire corridor by the end of 2026, although services may begin in phases depending on readiness.

This metro line is expected to play a transformative role in Bengaluru’s urban mobility by strengthening north-south connectivity, reducing travel time, and easing traffic congestion on some of the city’s busiest roads. It will also provide critical interchanges with other metro lines, making commuting more seamless for thousands of daily passengers.

In parallel, work on other metro corridors is also progressing steadily. The Yellow Line between RV Road and Bommasandra has already received its 10th train set, with eight trains currently in operation and another undergoing testing, indicating a broader push to enhance the metro network’s capacity.

Despite the progress, officials have made it clear that passenger operations will only begin after all safety validations are successfully completed, underscoring the priority given to reliability and commuter safety. As the trials progress over the coming weeks, the Pink Line moves closer to becoming a reality, though the final launch will depend entirely on regulatory clearances and successful test outcomes.
