Doctors Sound Alarm Over Food Safety as Temperatures Soar in Bengaluru

Date:

Bengaluru: With summer temperatures soaring across the city, medical experts have issued a serious public health warning over the rapid spoilage of food and rising risk of foodborne illnesses. Doctors and nutritionists say the intense heat is creating ideal conditions for bacterial growth, making even freshly cooked meals unsafe within hours if not stored properly.

The concern comes amid a broader rise in heat-related health issues, with experts highlighting that perishable items such as dairy products, leafy vegetables, berries, and cooked rice are especially vulnerable during this period. According to health professionals, high temperatures accelerate microbial activity, leading to contamination that may not always be visible to the naked eye.

Doctors caution that food which smells sour, appears slimy, or shows signs of curdling or mold should be discarded immediately, as consuming such items can lead to serious gastrointestinal infections. Symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and fever, which in severe cases can require medical attention.

The warning follows recent incidents highlighting the dangers of heat-induced food contamination. In one such case, nearly 100 people reportedly fell ill after consuming spoiled food, underscoring how quickly unsafe conditions can develop during extreme weather.

Health experts are urging citizens to follow strict food safety practices, including proper storage and timely consumption. One widely recommended guideline is the “2-2-2 rule”do not leave cooked food at room temperature for more than 2 hours, consume refrigerated food within 2 days, and avoid reheating food more than 2 times.

Additionally, maintaining the correct storage temperature is critical. Experts advise that refrigerators should be kept at or below 5°C, with adequate air circulation and clear separation between raw and cooked food items to prevent cross-contamination.

Doctors have also raised concerns over street food, cut fruits, and unpackaged beverages, which are more susceptible to contamination during summer. They recommend consuming freshly prepared meals and hygienically handled drinks, such as juices or tender coconut water, only from reliable sources.

Beyond food safety, experts emphasize the importance of hydration and hygiene. With rising temperatures, the body becomes more vulnerable to infections, and dehydration can further aggravate digestive issues. Health professionals suggest drinking clean water, washing produce thoroughly, and avoiding repeated reheating of leftovers.

As Bengaluru continues to face intense heat, doctors warn that awareness and preventive measures are key to avoiding a surge in food poisoning cases. Citizens are advised to remain vigilant, prioritize hygiene, and adopt safe food handling practices to protect themselves and their families during the summer months.
