Karnataka Initiates Land Acquisition for Suburban Rail Depot Near Devanahalli

Date:

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has initiated the process to acquire nearly 31,000 square metres of land near Devanahalli for a suburban rail depot, a key facility required for the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP). The move is aimed at supporting operations on the airport-bound rail corridor and addressing infrastructure gaps that have contributed to delays in the project.

The proposed depot will be located near Devanahalli, close to the Kempegowda International Airport corridor, which is a crucial part of the suburban rail network. Officials said the land acquisition process has been formally initiated and that forest clearance for the project has already been obtained, allowing authorities to move forward with implementation.

The depot is considered a critical component of the suburban rail system, as it will be used for train maintenance, stabling, and operational management. It is expected to serve trains operating on the KSR Bengaluru–Devanahalli corridor, which is designed to improve connectivity to the airport. Officials indicated that without such infrastructure, the efficiency and frequency of train operations would be significantly affected.

The suburban rail project is being implemented by Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Company (K-RIDE), a joint venture between the state government and Indian Railways. The project aims to develop a 148-kilometre rail network across four corridors, connecting Bengaluru with surrounding regions and key economic zones.

Authorities have acknowledged that land acquisition remains one of the biggest challenges facing the project. Delays in acquiring land across multiple corridors have slowed construction and affected timelines. The project, initially targeted for completion by 2026, is now expected to be completed closer to 2030, primarily due to issues related to land availability, approvals, and contractor constraints.

In this context, the move to acquire land for the Devanahalli depot is seen as a necessary step to ensure progress on at least one critical section of the network. Officials said that once the land acquisition process is completed, construction of the depot will begin, which will help support future rail operations and reduce bottlenecks.

The suburban rail system is expected to improve connectivity between Bengaluru and its outskirts, particularly for commuters travelling to the airport. The Devanahalli corridor is likely to reduce dependence on road transport, where traffic congestion continues to be a major issue. By providing an alternative mode of transport, the project aims to reduce travel time and improve overall mobility.

Transport experts note that the suburban rail network is designed to integrate with existing infrastructure such as metro rail and bus services. This multimodal approach is expected to create a more efficient urban transport system and ease pressure on major road corridors.

The Devanahalli region has witnessed rapid development due to its proximity to the airport, with increasing investments in industrial, commercial, and residential projects. Improved rail connectivity is expected to support this growth by enabling easier movement of people and enhancing access to key locations.

With forest clearance secured and land acquisition underway, the next phase will involve completing the acquisition process and initiating construction work on the depot. Officials have emphasised the importance of timely execution to align with revised project deadlines.

The progress of the depot project is expected to play a significant role in determining the pace of the broader suburban rail initiative. Once operational, the system is likely to contribute to improving urban mobility in Bengaluru by offering a reliable and efficient alternative to road-based transport.
