BENGALURU: In a significant technological upgrade aimed at enhancing aviation safety, the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru has rolled out an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven Smart Airside Safety System across critical operational zones. The initiative is designed to reduce risks arising from the movement of aircraft and ground vehicles in closely coordinated airside environments.
The system has been introduced by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) as part of its broader effort to modernise airport operations and improve safety standards in high-traffic areas where precision and coordination are essential.
Focus on high-risk operational zones
According to officials, the system primarily targets Cross Service Roads (CSRs)—key intersection points on the airside where aircraft taxi paths cross ground vehicle routes. These zones are considered highly sensitive because even minor miscommunication or delay can lead to serious safety hazards.
Traditionally, movement at these intersections relied heavily on manual or semi-manual signalling systems, including inset lighting and human supervision. However, such methods often left room for human error, delays, and limited visibility, especially during peak traffic hours or low-visibility conditions.
How the AI system works
The newly deployed Smart Airside Safety System integrates AI-based computer vision, real-time monitoring, and automated decision-making tools. High-resolution cameras installed at strategic points continuously track the movement of aircraft and ground vehicles.
The system is capable of:
- Detecting real-time movement patterns of vehicles and aircraft
- Identifying potential right-of-way conflicts before they occur
- Issuing automated alerts and warnings to prevent unsafe proximity
- Supporting centralised coordination between air traffic control and ground operations
Officials said the system also improves situational awareness by providing continuous digital surveillance of airside activity, reducing dependence on manual coordination.
Boost to safety and efficiency
Airport authorities believe the AI deployment will significantly enhance both operational safety and efficiency. By automating conflict detection and response, the system aims to minimise the risk of runway incursions, one of the most critical safety concerns in aviation.
With Bengaluru airport handling an average of hundreds of aircraft movements daily, the technology is expected to streamline ground operations and reduce unnecessary stoppages. It also supports faster clearance of airside intersections, contributing to improved turnaround times for flights.
Part of a larger digital push
The introduction of the AI safety system aligns with a broader global trend in aviation, where airports are increasingly adopting predictive analytics, automation, and computer vision technologies to manage rising air traffic safely.
BIAL officials noted that while KIA already maintains a strong safety record, the latest upgrade is a proactive measure to prepare for growing operational complexity and future air traffic expansion.
