Bengaluru: Bengaluru is poised for a major infrastructure overhaul, with Devanahalli set to become the city’s first major multimodal transit hub, bringing together a variety of travel amenities under the Bengaluru-Hyderabad High-Speed Rail project. This big project near Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) aims to bring high-speed trains, roads, air travel, and city facilities together in one well-connected transport system.
According to preliminary project plans, the hub will be developed through a Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) model, which promotes more and better urban development around public transportation. The project aims to reduce traffic congestion and private vehicle use in Bengaluru, while also making public transportation easier and more efficient.
Officials said nearly 80 hectares of land are likely to be acquired for the Devanahalli TOD project. The proposed station will be located on the northern side of the airport, approximately 2 km from KIA, making it a strategic transport gateway for both regional and interstate commuters.
The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) is executing the 607-km Bengaluru–Hyderabad bullet train corridor, with around 101 km passing through Karnataka. The corridor will feature three stations in the state — Alipura, Devanahalli and Kodihalli. Consultancy firm RITES is currently conducting the final location survey and preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR).
According to people familiar with the project, the elevated rail line will likely run along National Highway 44 near Chikkasanne and then go towards Bettakote Lake. The state government has appointed the additional secretary (railways) in the infrastructure development department as the main officer to manage coordination and land acquisition work.
The high-speed rail line is expected to reduce travel time between Bengaluru and Hyderabad to about two hours. This could help improve business travel, economic growth, and development in the region.
The Devanahalli project also aligns with North Bengaluru’s rapid infrastructure expansion, including suburban rail, metro connectivity and logistics growth around the airport region. Recently, authorities initiated land acquisition for a suburban rail depot near Devanahalli under the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project, further strengthening the region’s transportation network.
Urban planners believe that this multi-modal hub could reshape Bengaluru’s future development by creating a modern, transport-focused urban area around the airport corridor. This could also make Devanahalli one of Karnataka’s most important infrastructure hubs in the coming years.
