Govt Issues New Air Travel Guidelines: 60% Seats Without Extra Charge, Passenger Rights Strengthened

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has issued new guidelines to make air travel more affordable, transparent, and passenger-friendly, mandating that at least 60% of seats on every flight be available without any additional charge.

The move aims to ensure equal opportunity for passengers while improving the overall travel experience.

60% Seats to Be Available Without Extra Charges

Under the new directive, airlines must:

  • Offer at least 60% of seats without additional fees
  • Ensure fair access to seat selection for passengers

This step is expected to reduce extra costs and make air travel more transparent.

Passengers on Same PNR to Be Seated Together

The guidelines also focus on improving convenience for families and groups.

Key provisions include:

  • Passengers travelling on the same PNR should be seated together
  • Efforts to allocate adjacent seats for group travellers

This will enhance comfort, especially for families and elderly passengers.

Clear Policies for Baggage and Pets

The ministry has directed airlines to simplify rules for carrying special items such as:

  • Sports equipment
  • Musical instruments

Airlines must ensure transparent and easy procedures while adhering to safety and operational norms.

Additionally, airlines are required to:

  • Establish clear policies for carrying pets
  • Maintain transparency in charges and procedures

Strong Focus on Passenger Rights

The new guidelines reinforce passenger rights in situations such as:

  • Flight delays
  • Cancellations
  • Denied boarding

Airlines must:

  • Clearly display passenger rights on websites, mobile apps, booking platforms, and airport counters
  • Provide information in regional languages for better understanding

India Among Top Aviation Markets Globally

Key highlights:

  • UDAN Yatri Cafes
  • “Flybrary” with free books
  • Free Wi-Fi at airports

These measures aim to improve customer experience while maintaining safety standards.

Commitment to Transparent and Safe Air Travel
