New Delhi: Artificial Intelligence leader OpenAI has announced plans to open two new offices in Bengaluru and Mumbai by the end of this year, further strengthening its footprint in India’s rapidly growing AI market.
The expansion follows the launch of OpenAI’s first India office in New Delhi in August 2025 and reflects rising demand for AI tools such as ChatGPT across the country.
Expansion Under ‘OpenAI for India’ Initiative
The move is part of the company’s broader “OpenAI for India” initiative aimed at:
- Expanding access to AI technologies
- Building robust sovereign AI systems
- Accelerating digital transformation in the enterprise sector
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said India is among the fastest adopters of AI globally and possesses strong technical talent.
He emphasized the company’s commitment to working closely with Indian stakeholders to build necessary AI infrastructure and skill capabilities.
Data Centre Collaboration with Tata Group
OpenAI is collaborating with the Tata Group to develop AI-ready data centre infrastructure in India. The company will become the first customer of TCS’s Hypervault data centre, enabling secure and high-speed AI services within the country.
Tata Group is also planning to implement ChatGPT Enterprise for its workforce to enhance productivity and innovation.
In addition, companies such as Pine Labs, PhonePe and HCLTech are integrating OpenAI’s AI tools into their systems to drive operational efficiency.
Focus on AI Skilling and Education
OpenAI is placing significant emphasis on AI skill development in India. In partnership with TCS and leading educational institutions, the company is launching certification programmes and plans to distribute over 100,000 ChatGPT education licenses to students.
These initiatives aim to equip learners with AI-driven skills and prepare them for emerging digital careers.
India Emerges as Key Market for ChatGPT
India has become the second-largest market globally for ChatGPT, with millions of weekly users. OpenAI expects the country to potentially become its largest global market in the near future.
With new offices, enterprise partnerships and education-focused initiatives, OpenAI’s expansion signals strong confidence in India’s AI ecosystem and long-term digital growth trajectory.
