PM Narendra Modi Addresses Israeli Parliament Knesset, Becomes First Indian PM to Do So

Jerusalem: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed Israel’s Parliament, the Knesset, during his two-day official visit to Israel, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to do so.

The historic address marked a significant milestone in India-Israel diplomatic relations.

Formal Welcome and Bipartisan Support

PM Modi was formally welcomed by Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana. Ahead of his address, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Leader of the Opposition Yair Lapid also spoke in Parliament, expressing strong bipartisan support for deepening India-Israel ties.

Gratitude for Highest Honour

Beginning his speech, PM Modi thanked the Speaker and expressed gratitude for being conferred the “Speaker of the Knesset” medal. He dedicated the honour to the enduring friendship and shared democratic traditions of India and Israel.

Strengthening Strategic Partnership

Highlighting the depth of bilateral relations, PM Modi said India-Israel ties are rooted in ancient civilizational connections as well as modern cooperation in technology, innovation, defence, security, and strategic alignment.

He underlined collaboration in agriculture, rural development, water management, sustainable development, and entrepreneurship as key pillars strengthening people-to-people ties.

Role of Diaspora Communities

The Prime Minister acknowledged the contributions of the Indian community in Israel and the Jewish community in India, noting their vital role in deepening bilateral relations and fostering mutual progress.

Zero Tolerance for Terrorism

Referring to the October 7 terror attack victims, PM Modi expressed condolences and reiterated that such brutality cannot be justified. He reaffirmed India’s firm stance against terrorism and support for lasting peace and stability in the region, including backing UN Security Council-supported peace initiatives for Gaza.

Multilateral Cooperation and Economic Corridors

PM Modi called for enhanced cooperation on multilateral platforms and deeper engagement in frameworks such as the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor and I2U2.

He emphasized expanding collaboration in trade, investment, infrastructure, green growth, startups, digital solutions, and emerging technologies, while urging the early conclusion of an ambitious Free Trade Agreement.

Shared Democratic Values

The Prime Minister also mentioned the formation of the India-Israel Parliamentary Friendship Group and encouraged greater parliamentary dialogue between the two democracies.

He noted that India’s philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” and Israel’s concept of “Tikkun Olam” reflect a shared vision for a harmonious and responsible global order.

Concluding his address, PM Modi thanked members of the Knesset for their contribution to India-Israel relations and extended greetings on the upcoming festival of Purim.
