Prime Minister Modi Hosts Bipartisan US Congressional Delegation in Delhi

Date:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today welcomed a bipartisan United States Congressional delegation led by Congressman Michael McCaul. The visit marks a significant step in reinforcing the strategic partnership between India and the United States. Notably, former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was part of the delegation, alongside Representatives Gregory Meeks, Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Nicole Malliotakis, Ami Bera, and Jim McGovern.

The delegation’s visit to India began with a notable meeting with the Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama at his residence in Dharamshala. Reflecting on this meeting, Pelosi posted on X, “Today, it was my honor to join a bipartisan Congressional delegation to meet with His Holiness, the 14th @DalaiLama, in Dharamsala, India. In our meeting, we strongly reaffirmed Congressional support for the people of Tibet.”

In their meeting with Prime Minister Modi, discussions focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation, regional security, and the shared democratic values that underpin India-US relations. Prime Minister Modi expressed appreciation for the delegation’s visit, highlighting the importance of sustained dialogue and collaboration between the two nations.

The delegation also held discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra on Wednesday night. Minister Jaishankar thanked the delegation for their steadfast support of the India-US strategic partnership. He tweeted, “Pleasure to meet with the bipartisan US Congressional delegation led by @RepMcCaul. Thank @SpeakerPelosi, @RepGregoryMeeks, @RepMMM, @NMalliotakis, @RepBera, and @RepMcGovern for joining. Appreciate their strong and continued support for the strategic partnership.”

Upon arriving in India on Tuesday, the US lawmakers were received by officials from the Central Tibetan Administration at Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra Airport. They then proceeded to Dharamsala for their significant meeting with the Dalai Lama. Congressman McCaul presented the Dalai Lama with a framed copy of ‘The Resolve Tibet Act,’ a bipartisan bill recently passed by the US Congress aimed at enhancing US support for Tibet.

This bill calls on Beijing to re-engage with the Dalai Lama and other Tibetan leaders to peacefully resolve their disputes over Tibet’s status and governance. The passage of this act by the US Congress underscores the international commitment to addressing the human rights and autonomy issues in Tibet.

The bipartisan delegation’s visit to India and their meetings with top Indian officials reflect the robust and evolving nature of India-US relations. The discussions covered key areas such as regional security, economic cooperation, and the promotion of democratic values, all crucial to the strategic partnership.

As both countries continue to deepen their ties, the engagements during this visit underscore the importance of legislative diplomacy in strengthening bilateral relations. The delegation’s support reinforces the commitment to shared values and collaborative efforts in addressing global challenges.

The visit concludes with a renewed sense of cooperation and mutual commitment, setting the stage for further strengthening the strategic partnership between India and the United States. The outcomes of these high-level interactions are expected to pave the way for more profound and comprehensive collaboration in various sectors, contributing to global peace, stability, and prosperity.
