April 2026: The Government of India has launched a comprehensive multi-sector response to mitigate the impact of escalating tensions in West Asia, focusing on fuel security, gas infrastructure expansion, and the safety of Indian nationals abroad.
Fuel Supply Measures Amid Strait of Hormuz Disruptions
In response to disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Ministry of External Affairs outlined key steps to stabilise domestic supply.
- LPG booking intervals extended to 25 days (urban) and 45 days (rural)
- Supply of 5 kg Free Trade LPG cylinders doubled for migrant workers
- Citizens urged to avoid panic buying
Authorities have also empowered states under the Essential Commodities Act to act against hoarding, with 2,950+ enforcement raids conducted nationwide, including a major seizure in Kerala.
Push for PNG to Reduce LPG Dependency
To ease pressure on LPG supplies, the government is accelerating the transition to Piped Natural Gas (PNG):
- 4.40 lakh new PNG connections activated since March
- Nearly 5 lakh additional registrations recorded
- States incentivised with extra commercial LPG allocations
This move aims to ensure long-term energy resilience and supply stability.
Excise Duty Cut and Export Controls
Amid rising global crude prices, the Centre has:
- Reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹10 per litre
- Increased export levies on diesel and aviation turbine fuel (ATF)
These measures are intended to maintain adequate domestic fuel availability.
Maritime Operations and Seafarer Safety
The Directorate General of Shipping confirmed that port operations remain normal, with no congestion reported.
- 2,262 Indian seafarers facilitated for return
- Continuous monitoring of Indian vessels in Gulf waters
Evacuation Efforts Intensify
India has stepped up evacuation and travel support for citizens in affected regions:
- 2,300+ Indians evacuated via Armenia and Azerbaijan from Iran
- Passengers from Kuwait and Bahrain routed through Saudi Arabia
- Evacuations from Israel and Iraq via Jordan and Egypt
- Flights continue from UAE and Qatar
Since February 28, nearly 9.55 lakh passengers have returned to India from West Asia.
Diplomatic Engagements Underway
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has engaged with counterparts from Kuwait, Israel, Singapore, and Australia to coordinate response efforts and ensure the safety of the Indian diaspora.
Indian missions remain operational round-the-clock, offering assistance through dedicated helplines.
