Census 2027 Begins in Bengaluru: Over 26,000 Personnel Deployed for House-to-House Survey

Date:

Bengaluru, April 2026: The first phase of Census 2027 has officially begun across the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) limits, with authorities deploying over 26,000 personnel to carry out extensive house-to-house data collection.

Massive Deployment for Census Exercise

A total of 26,616 staff, including 23,705 enumerators and around 2,900 supervisors, have been deployed across Bengaluru’s five city corporations to conduct the survey.

Each enumerator has been assigned a target to cover multiple households daily as part of the initial phase.

Door-to-Door Survey After Low Online Response

Authorities had earlier offered a self-enumeration option from April 1 to April 15, but participation remained low at around 2%, prompting a full-scale physical survey.

Residents are now required to provide details directly to enumerators visiting their homes.

What Data Will Be Collected

During the first phase, officials will gather responses to 33 questions related to household conditions, including:

  • Number of rooms and housing materials
  • Water source and sanitation facilities
  • Ownership of vehicles
  • Social category of the household head

This phase focuses on house listing and basic demographic data collection.

Mandatory Participation Under Law

Officials have stressed that participation in the census is mandatory under the Census Act, 1948, and refusal to cooperate may invite legal action.

The process is designed to be quick, typically taking 5–10 minutes per household.

Mop-Up Rounds for Missed Households

To ensure full coverage, authorities will conduct evening mop-up rounds (6 pm–9 pm) starting a week after the initial visits, targeting working residents who may not be available during the day.

Next Phase Scheduled for 2027

The current exercise is a preliminary stage, with the main population census scheduled for February 2027, where more detailed individual-level data will be collected.
