Bengaluru, April 2026: The Karnataka Forest Department has rolled out a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to enhance safety for trekkers across forest areas, following recent incidents of missing and injured hikers.
Strict Rules Introduced After Safety Concerns
The SOP has been introduced in response to recent trekking incidents, including cases of people going missing in forest regions.
Officials said the guidelines aim to standardise trekking operations and minimise risks across all designated forest trails.
Key Safety Measures for Trekkers
The new SOP introduces several mandatory rules:
- Group size capped at 10 trekkers per guide
- Maximum 150 trekkers allowed per day across 44 trails
- No trekking without a trained guide
- All treks must be completed within a single day (no overnight stays)
Additionally, trek distances have been restricted, and routes are classified into easy, moderate, and advanced categories for better planning.
Mandatory GPS Tracking and Registration
To improve monitoring and quick response:
- Trekkers must register online via the Aranya Vihaara portal
- Mobile tracking apps will be installed for real-time location monitoring
- Guides will carry GPS-enabled walkie-talkies and first-aid kits
These measures will help authorities track trekkers and respond quickly in case of emergencies.
Safety Protocols During Trek
The SOP also mandates:
- Pre-trek briefings on route, weather, and risks
- Regular headcounts and check-ins with base camp
- Clearly marked trails with QR codes and digital maps
- Protocols for lost trekkers and wildlife encounters
Treks may be cancelled if wildlife movement or weather poses danger.
Strict Enforcement and Penalties
Authorities have warned that:
- Trekkers violating rules (like splitting from groups) may be blacklisted
- Guides must report violations in real time
- Non-compliance will attract strict action against organisers and officials
Focus on Responsible and Sustainable Trekking
The SOP also emphasises:
- Eco-friendly practices at base camps
- Limiting human impact on forests
- Ensuring safe and regulated eco-tourism
A Move Toward Safer Eco-Tourism
The initiative is being seen as a major step toward safer, more regulated trekking in Karnataka, balancing adventure tourism with environmental protection and public safety.
