The Indian Army has taken another step toward strengthening its combat preparedness with the raising of the 16th ‘Bhairav Battalion’ at the Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre (MLIRC) in Belagavi, Karnataka, a move aimed at enhancing its operational capabilities in challenging environments.
The newly formed unit is part of a broader push to build specialised, high-mobility infantry forces capable of operating effectively in difficult and diverse terrain. Officials indicated that the battalion has been designed with a clear focus on agility, rapid deployment, and tactical efficiency, which are increasingly critical in modern-day conflict scenarios.
With evolving security challenges along borders and in sensitive regions, the Army is focusing on units that can respond swiftly. The Bhairav battalions are structured to deliver quick-reaction combat capabilities, allowing forces to be deployed at short notice. This “fight tonight” readiness ensures that troops can engage in operations almost immediately when required, significantly improving response time during emergencies or escalations.
The 16th battalion is also a key component of the Army’s transformation into a leaner and more technology-driven force. These units are smaller than traditional infantry battalions but are highly trained and specialised for missions such as reconnaissance, surprise strikes, and high-intensity combat operations. Typically comprising around 200–250 personnel, they are built for flexibility and precision rather than large-scale, prolonged engagements.
The Bhairav battalions are designed to function as a bridge between regular infantry and elite special forces, filling a crucial operational gap. While special forces units handle highly sensitive missions, these battalions can undertake fast-paced offensive roles and tactical operations, reducing the burden on elite formations while maintaining effectiveness on the ground.
The raising ceremony at Belagavi underscores the importance of the Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre, one of the Army’s oldest and most respected training institutions. The centre has historically played a vital role in shaping combat-ready soldiers, and the addition of this battalion further strengthens its legacy in contributing to national defence.
Another key aspect of the Bhairav battalion concept is the “sons of the soil” approach, where troops are often selected from regions similar to their deployment areas. This ensures that soldiers possess better familiarity with local terrain, climate, and operational conditions, which enhances their effectiveness during missions. The Indian Army has already raised several such battalions and plans to expand their numbers further as part of its long-term modernisation strategy. The focus is on creating smaller, faster, and more lethal combat units that can adapt to hybrid warfare, where conflicts involve a mix of conventional, irregular, and technology-driven tactics.
The induction of the 16th Bhairav Battalion is therefore seen as a significant boost to India’s defence preparedness, particularly in scenarios requiring swift action across varied terrains such as mountains, deserts, and border regions. It reflects the Army’s continued commitment to maintaining a high state of operational readiness, flexibility, and combat effectiveness in an increasingly complex security environment.
