Bengaluru: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has formally witnessed a leadership change with Ravi K taking charge as the new Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of the Bengaluru-based defence public sector undertaking, following the superannuation of outgoing CMD Dr D K Sunil on April 30, 2026. The transition marks a key administrative shift in one of India’s most strategic aerospace and defence manufacturing organisations, which plays a central role in indigenous aircraft production and military aviation support.
The appointment was confirmed by HAL in an official statement, which said Ravi K has assumed charge as the 22nd CMD of the company. HAL is a Maharatna public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence and is responsible for designing, manufacturing, and maintaining aircraft, helicopters, engines, and aerospace systems for the Indian Armed Forces. The organisation is currently executing several major defence programmes, including fighter aircraft and helicopter projects.
Ravi K brings over three decades of experience in aerospace engineering and defence manufacturing, having spent the majority of his career within HAL. Prior to his elevation, he served as Director (Operations), where he oversaw production planning, manufacturing execution, and coordination across major divisions. He has also held senior leadership roles, including Executive Director and General Manager of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Division, one of India’s most significant indigenous fighter aircraft programmes.
According to HAL, Ravi K has contributed significantly to strengthening production capabilities and improving delivery systems in key defence programmes. He has been closely associated with major indigenous platforms such as the LCA Tejas fighter aircraft and the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH), both of which are considered central to India’s self-reliance goals in defence manufacturing. His experience in these programmes is expected to play a key role in guiding HAL’s future operations.
In his new role, Ravi K is expected to oversee HAL’s ongoing and upcoming projects, including fighter aircraft production, helicopter manufacturing, and maintenance support for the Indian Air Force and other defence services. The company is currently engaged in large-scale manufacturing contracts involving the Tejas aircraft and advanced helicopter systems, which are critical to modernising India’s air defence capabilities.
Officials indicated that the leadership change comes at a time when HAL is expanding its production capacity and increasing its focus on indigenisation. In recent years, the company has worked to reduce dependence on imported components and strengthen domestic supply chains in aerospace manufacturing. The organisation has also been exploring greater collaboration with private sector partners under government defence production policies.
Ravi K has also been involved in strategic initiatives aimed at expanding HAL’s presence in civil aviation, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services, and export-oriented aerospace production. These areas are expected to play a growing role in the company’s long-term business strategy as India increases its focus on defence exports and aviation services.
HAL remains a key pillar of India’s defence ecosystem, responsible for supporting air force readiness and developing indigenous platforms such as the Tejas fighter aircraft and Dhruv helicopter series. The organisation is also involved in several long-term programmes that support India’s strategic aviation requirements.
Industry observers note that leadership transitions at HAL are significant due to the company’s central role in defence manufacturing and procurement. The new CMD is expected to focus on improving production timelines, enhancing operational efficiency, and accelerating technological development, particularly in advanced aerospace systems and automation.
Ravi K’s appointment comes at a crucial time when HAL is expected to handle increased demand from domestic defence procurement programmes, making capacity expansion and timely delivery key priorities for the organisation.
