Bengaluru/Kolar, April 24: In an inspiring story of determination and courage, a teenage girl from Karnataka has turned personal tragedy into academic success, proving that resilience can overcome even the toughest odds. Kusuma S, also known as Kusumanjali, a student of a government-aided school in Kolar Gold Fields (KGF), secured a first class in the SSLC (Class 10) examinations with 374 marks out of 625, despite battling severe injuries and prolonged hospitalization.
What makes her achievement extraordinary is the journey behind it. The young student had suffered a major accident in September last year, leaving her with serious injuries to her leg, thigh, and hips, which required multiple surgeries and months of recovery.Even before she could fully recover, complications arose. She was re-admitted to the hospital in December after developing an infection, further delaying her return to normal life. Doctors indicated that additional procedures might still be required once her condition stabilises.
However, giving up on her academic year was never an option.
Confined to a hospital bed, Kusuma continued her studies with unwavering focus. Her teachers played a crucial role by sending notes, assignments, and study materials directly to her mobile phone, ensuring she stayed connected with her coursework. Classmates also extended their support, helping her keep pace with lessons despite her absence from school.
As the examination season approached, Kusuma made a bold decision. She chose to appear for the SSLC exams despite her fragile condition, determined not to lose an academic year. With coordinated efforts from her school authorities and the education department, special arrangements were made to facilitate her participation.
She was granted permission to write the exams with the help of a scribe, a provision that ensured she could attempt the papers despite her physical limitations. In scenes that stood out during the examination period, Kusuma arrived at the exam centre in an ambulance, a stark contrast to other students who walked in with hall tickets and pens. Yet, her determination remained unshaken.
Her hard work paid off. She successfully passed with a first class, scoring 374 out of 625 marks, earning grades across subjects while continuing her recovery under medical supervision. Despite still being under treatment, Kusuma has expressed deep gratitude towards her teachers, classmates, and parents for their constant encouragement and support throughout her challenging journey. Her story comes at a time when Karnataka’s SSLC results have shown significant improvement overall, reflecting a positive trend in the state’s education system.
More importantly, Kusuma’s achievement stands out as a powerful reminder that determination, support, and perseverance can help students overcome even life-threatening setbacks. From an ICU bed to the examination hall, her journey is not just about academic success—it is a testament to human spirit, grit, and the unwavering pursuit of dreams against all odds.
