Karnataka to Roll Out Revised Minimum Wages Soon, Says Minister Santosh Lad

Date:

The Karnataka government is set to introduce a revised minimum wage policy for workers, a move that is expected to significantly improve the earnings of labourers across sectors. State Labour Minister Santosh S Lad announced that the new wage structure will soon be implemented, aligning with national guidelines and focusing on ensuring a more dignified standard of living for workers.

According to officials, the revised wages are expected to average around ₹19,000 per month, reflecting a major step toward addressing the rising cost of living. The new framework has been designed in line with Supreme Court guidelines, which take into account essential needs such as food, clothing, housing, education, and healthcare while determining minimum wages.

The decision comes at a time when there is increasing demand for better pay and social security, particularly among workers in the unorganised sector. The government has emphasised that the revised wage system will benefit a wide range of workers, including daily wage earners, contract workers, and those employed in informal industries. Officials believe the move will help reduce income inequality and improve overall living standards.

In addition to the wage revision, the state is also working on multiple welfare initiatives aimed at strengthening worker protection. Among these is the Ambedkar Sahaya Hasta scheme, which has been introduced to provide financial assistance and support to labourers. The government is also focusing on expanding social security measures to ensure that workers have access to basic financial safety nets and benefits.

A key highlight of the state’s labour reforms is the introduction of India’s first Gig Workers Bill, aimed at safeguarding the rights of workers employed through digital platforms such as ride-hailing and food delivery services. This legislation is expected to provide legal protection, welfare benefits, and improved working conditions for gig workers, a rapidly growing segment of the workforce. The government is also planning to issue smart cards for drivers and cleaners, which will help streamline access to welfare schemes and ensure better tracking of benefits. These measures are part of a broader effort to digitise labour welfare systems and improve service delivery.

Further, the state is working on new legislative measures such as the Cine Workers Bill and the Domestic Workers Bill, which aim to extend social security coverage to workers in specific sectors that have traditionally lacked formal protections. These proposed laws are expected to address long-standing gaps in worker welfare and ensure comprehensive coverage across industries.

The move to revise minimum wages is part of Karnataka’s wider strategy to create a more equitable labour environment while balancing economic growth. Experts note that minimum wages in the state are periodically revised based on factors such as inflation, cost of living, and skill levels, ensuring that compensation remains relevant to current economic conditions.

Overall, the upcoming implementation of the new minimum wage policy is seen as a major boost for workers’ rights and welfare in Karnataka. By combining wage reforms with social security initiatives and legislative changes, the government aims to build a more inclusive and sustainable labour ecosystem. The decision is expected to have a wide-ranging impact on millions of workers, particularly those in vulnerable and low-income groups, while reinforcing the state’s commitment to improving labour conditions and economic stability.
