Karnataka Braces for Weak Monsoon; Water Stress Looms in 213 Taluks

Date:

Bengaluru, April 2026: Karnataka is preparing for a potential water crisis as forecasts of a below-normal monsoon raise concerns over drinking water availability across the state.

213 Taluks Identified as Vulnerable

According to officials, 213 taluks and over 2,400 gram panchayats have been identified as vulnerable to drinking water shortages. Out of these, 114 taluks and nearly 600 gram panchayats are already facing stress, indicating an early onset of the crisis.

Several districts, including Kalaburagi, Tumakuru, and Haveri, are among the worst affected.

Weak Monsoon Forecast Raises Alarm

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted below-normal rainfall across most parts of Karnataka, with only August likely to receive near-normal precipitation.

The state government has warned that, except for a few districts, much of Karnataka may face a monsoon deficit, increasing the risk of drought-like conditions.

Water Supply Measures Underway

To tackle the emerging situation, authorities have initiated several emergency steps:

  • Deployment of water tankers in affected areas
  • Hiring of private borewells to supply villages
  • Setting up control rooms for monitoring complaints

Currently, water is being supplied to hundreds of villages through tankers and borewells to manage shortages.

Urban Areas Also at Risk

The crisis is not limited to rural regions.

  • 27 urban local bodies are already facing shortages
  • Another 95 urban areas have been identified as vulnerable

Cities like Bengaluru are expected to face increasing pressure on water resources as summer intensifies.

Reservoir Levels Slightly Lower

Water levels in major reservoirs stand at around 36% of total capacity, slightly lower than last year, though still sufficient for now.

However, officials have stressed the need to conserve water until mid-July, as the monsoon onset may be delayed.

Government Issues Strict Directions

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has directed district authorities to:

  • Prioritise drinking water over irrigation
  • Ensure no disruption in supply
  • Take preventive measures immediately

He also warned that officials would be held accountable for any lapses in water management.

Outlook: Tough Summer Ahead

With rising temperatures and uncertain rainfall, Karnataka faces a challenging summer, requiring careful water management, conservation efforts, and timely intervention to avoid a full-blown crisis.
