Karnataka EV Charging Boom: KERC Policy Relief Spurs Expansion at Petrol Pumps

Date:

Bengaluru, April 2026: Karnataka is witnessing a rapid expansion in electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, particularly at petrol pumps, following recent policy relief by the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC).

Policy Push Driving EV Infrastructure Growth

Recent regulatory measures by KERC have made it easier and more viable to set up EV charging stations, encouraging oil marketing companies (OMCs) to accelerate installations across the state.

The move is seen as a key enabler in transitioning from traditional fuel retailing to clean energy-based mobility solutions.

Petrol Pumps Turning into EV Hubs

Fuel stations, especially in and around Bengaluru, are increasingly being converted into multi-energy hubs, offering both conventional fuels and EV charging facilities.

OMCs are leveraging their existing infrastructure and strategic locations to cater to the growing number of EV users.

Boost to Electric Mobility Ecosystem

The expansion is expected to:

  • Improve availability of charging points
  • Reduce range anxiety among EV users
  • Accelerate adoption of electric vehicles

Karnataka already leads in EV infrastructure, and this push is likely to further strengthen its position as a front-runner in electric mobility.

Policy and Tariff Reforms Key Enablers

KERC’s broader regulatory framework focuses on:

  • Rationalising electricity tariffs
  • Reducing cross-subsidies
  • Encouraging efficient power usage

These measures have indirectly supported EV infrastructure by making power supply for charging stations more viable and predictable.

Aligning with Sustainability Goals

The initiative aligns with both state and national clean energy targets, aiming to:

  • Reduce carbon emissions
  • Promote sustainable transport
  • Decrease dependence on fossil fuels

Growing Momentum for EV Ecosystem

With policy backing, infrastructure expansion, and rising consumer interest, Karnataka is witnessing a significant shift towards electric mobility, with petrol pumps playing a central role in this transformation.
