The Indian Air Force (IAF) has carried out a successful trial of an emergency landing strip on the Purvanchal Expressway in Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow–Sultanpur stretch, as part of efforts to boost India’s wartime preparedness and quick-response capabilities.
The exercise was aimed at assessing the expressway’s ability to function as a temporary runway for fighter jets and transport aircraft during emergencies or conflict scenarios. Officials said the IAF conducted both take-off and landing operations on a designated section of the expressway, which has been specially designed and strengthened for potential military aviation use.
The drill is part of a broader national defence programme under which select expressways across India are being developed as emergency airstrips for military aircraft. The Purvanchal Expressway is among the key infrastructure corridors identified for this strategic purpose due to its design and location advantages.
Defence sources stated that the exercise demonstrated the operational flexibility of the Indian Air Force, highlighting its ability to seamlessly switch between conventional airbases and highway-based runways when required. The successful trial also reflects strong coordination between the IAF, Uttar Pradesh government authorities, and expressway management agencies, ensuring that safety and aviation standards are met.
The use of highways as airstrips is seen as an important boost to India’s defence preparedness, especially in areas where rapid deployment of air assets is critical during emergencies. Such infrastructure allows aircraft to operate closer to potential operational zones, reducing response time in high-pressure situations.
The Purvanchal Expressway, one of Uttar Pradesh’s major infrastructure projects, has previously also hosted similar defence drills. These exercises typically involve temporary closure of selected stretches of the highway and deployment of security personnel to ensure safe and controlled conditions for aircraft operations.
Officials further added that the latest exercise forms part of routine preparedness training and reflects the armed forces’ continued focus on strengthening multi-domain operational capability and integration of civil infrastructure with defence requirements.
With this successful test, the Indian Air Force has once again demonstrated its ability to utilize dual-use infrastructure for strategic purposes, reinforcing India’s growing emphasis on mobility, flexibility, and rapid military deployment readiness.
